What major trends will impact on Araneo?

  1. The uptake of broadband in New Zealand will have a tremendous impact on Araneo. As more people use consumer products such as JetStream at home, the demand for higher-grade connections in the SOHO market will increase. As Telecom have priced business grade connections out of reach and Telstra have very limited availability, Araneo see an opportunity to take advantage of this trend in the near term.
  2. The introduction of television technologies such as PVRs and HDTV is beginning to have an impact on how people watch television in some parts of the world. Off-line viewing and pay-per view will supplant the traditional video store as soon as the technology allows it. The ability to select any one of ten thousand movies from one's home television without a trip to the store is very attractive to the average consumer. JetStream and narrow-band wireless as being deployed by Telecom and BCL are incapable of supporting video on demand technology in their current iterations. Wireless may well have the edge in bringing these new services in to the home.
  3. The growth of PC based video conferencing is finally bringing video conferences into the main stream. In the US and europe, most Macintosh computers now ship with cameras and built-in software for video conferencing over broadband links. Because of limitations on speed and use of JetStream, these applications will be slow to catch on. With an alternative such as wireless, it should be expected that Kiwis will keep pace with the rest of the first world in terms of adopting this new technology.
