Market Analysis: Competitors
What are our competitors currently doing?
CityLink - in the past have concentrated on CafeNet. Are expanding CafeNet to other parts of New Zealand, utilizing leased lines from TelstraClear in order to backhaul data. Have several outdoor wireless links and access points in both 2.4 and 5.8 GHz public spectrum, but do not promote these products.
NZWireless - do not provide coverage maps or pricing online. Market wireless via press and PR. Offer low-cost products bundled with Internet access. Are adding access points and have more than a dozen visible in Wellington. Sell unlimited use products with lower international access speeds.
Compass - have recently partnered with BCL to resell Extend wireless in addition to installing access points in ten cities in New Zealand. Sell plans based on traffic charges as opposed to unlimited use circuits.
BCL - have rolled out Extend to 28 towers throughout New Zealand and can cover over 600,000 people with service. This product, priced and marketed right, should be the final answer for rural narrowband Internet access. Coupled with satellite, Extend is capable of covering farms for purposes of Internet access and E-Commerce, but can be very expensive.
Wired Country - have not updated coverage maps in the last year. So far have had technical issues in their deployments. Are being re-sold by nine service providers, with plans mostly aimed at home use. Speeds advertised by retail partners are up to 2mbps download and 1mbps upload (peak).
Woosh Wireless - have halted roll-out of their flagship product due to technical issues. Have dropped some Project Probe roll-outs and have refactored others so that equipment installed is Trango unlicensed 5.8GHz.
