One of New Zealand’s most rural schools gets unlimited broadband

Kereru School has just 23 pupils but thanks to the vision of principal Tristan Cheer and government funding, from today these country kids will have access to high speed, virtually unlimited broadband.

The new service was launched today by local MP Craig Foss, at a function at the school in the tiny community of Kereru near Hastings.

It’s the first of 25 remote schools being linked up by Wellington wireless internet company Araneo with high speed wireless internet access. This work is part of the Remote Schools Rural Broadband Initiative to network small schools which can’t be connected by fibre due to their location.

The new service into Kereru School isn’t capped, meaning there is virtually no limit to how much surfing the children and staff can do.

This broadband connection has a capacity of at least 10Mbps in both directions,” said Araneo General Manager Nick Lourantos, “that’s as good or better than many people in Auckland and Wellington can get”.

The remaining 24 schools being connected by Araneo will be progressively being linked into the Araneo network over the next few months, with the roll-out due to be finished by the start of the 2013 school year.

FX Networks are a key partner in this project. The Remote Schools Rural Broadband Initiative has $2.4M of government funding, through the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment.

Nick Lourantos, General Manager Araneo said this proves that with wireless and network technology, geographic isolation doesn’t have to be a barrier to online learning.

Staff and students will be able to access the latest educational programmes, make Skype video calls, access YouTube and educational video content, watch real time news from all over the world and access their email at the same time”.
